Introduction
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) uses an event-based measurement model. Rather than relying on traditional session-based pageviews, GA4 tracks distinct user interactions—such as button clicks, form submissions, video engagement, and file downloads—as discrete events.
Understanding Events in GA4
GA4 organizes events into three main tiers:
- Automatically Collected Events: Tracked by default (e.g., page_view, first_visit, session_start).
- Enhanced Measurement Events: Configured in Data Streams (e.g., scroll, click, file_download, video_start).
- Recommended & Custom Events: Custom interactions defined with specific parameters (e.g., generate_lead, sign_up, request_quote).
Step-by-Step: Setting Up Custom Events
- Define Business Intent: Identify the high-value conversions on your site (such as demo requests or pricing downloads).
- Configure via Google Tag Manager (GTM): Create a GA4 Event Tag triggered by the specific click class, ID, or form submission element.
- Add Custom Parameters: Pass contextual attributes (e.g., form_name, button_location, item_category) to enrich reporting.
- Test in Tag Assistant & DebugView: Verify that events fire with accurate parameter values before deploying live.
- Mark Key Events as Conversions: In GA4 Admin > Events, toggle critical interactions as conversions to power attribution reports.
